FG Rejects Claims of Approving History Textbook Without Igbo Content
The Federal Government (FG) has denied reports suggesting it approved or endorsed a history textbook allegedly lacking a section on Igbo history, describing the claims as false, misleading and inaccurate.
In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the government clarified that the controversial textbook, widely circulated online and in public discussions, was never approved for use in Nigerian schools. The ministry stressed that it did not recommend or endorse the book for teaching History at any level of the nation’s education system.
According to the ministry, the textbook was not submitted to the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the statutory body responsible for reviewing, evaluating and approving instructional materials in line with the national curriculum. As a result, the book did not undergo the mandatory vetting process and does not feature on the list of approved textbooks for Nigerian schools.

The Federal Government reiterated that all approved history textbooks must reflect Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups, shared heritage and collective experiences, while promoting national unity, inclusiveness and balance. It warned schools and education stakeholders against the use of unapproved learning materials, noting that such practices could undermine educational standards and distort historical understanding among students.
The ministry further urged parents, teachers, school owners and administrators to always verify the approval status of textbooks through official government channels, particularly NERDC, before adopting them for classroom use.
FG also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and divisive narratives, emphasizing that the government remains committed to ensuring that the teaching of Nigerian history is fair, accurate and representative of all regions and ethnic groups, including the Igbo.
