FG Renames Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Charges Troops to Intensify Fight Against Terrorism
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially redesignated Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, to better reflect the essence of the occasion.
The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, announced the change in a statement on Thursday, explaining that the new name underscores the dual purpose of the day—celebrating serving personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) while honouring fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation.
“January 15 is set aside annually by the Federal Government of Nigeria to honour the living personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria while acknowledging the sacrifices of those who have safeguarded the nation’s territorial integrity, as well as the lives and property of citizens,” Uba said.
He noted that the former title, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, has now been officially changed to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day to more accurately capture its significance. Uba urged the media to adopt the new designation in all future reportage, while appreciating journalists for their continued support in the fight against insecurity.

Shaibu gave the charge during an operational tour of Army formations in Niger State, while addressing officers and men of 18 Brigade, Latini Barracks, Bida, and later at the 31 Artillery Brigade, Minna.
The army chief urged troops operating in Shiroro, Rijau, and other areas within the brigade’s Area of Responsibility to remain firm, vigilant, and decisive against criminal elements.
He assured personnel of an improved welfare package aimed at boosting morale and operational effectiveness, stressing that the welfare of troops and their families remains a top priority.
Shaibu disclosed plans for the construction of additional accommodation facilities and the establishment of skills acquisition centres to enhance the well-being and economic empowerment of soldiers’ families.
He commended the troops for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication, urging them to continue upholding fundamental human rights in line with the United Nations Charter as they discharge their duties.
