The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has discovered and closed 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating in Nigeria.

The move was part of a nationwide crackdown on unapproved schools awarding fake certificates. According to the commission, it also carried out staff audits and financial checks across all 21 federal colleges of education to strengthen accountability.

Recently, President Bola Tinubu directed agencies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the NCCE to eliminate illegal higher institutions from the system.

Speaking at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, Tinubu described such institutions as “certificate mills” that damage the country’s education system.

The President, represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, stressed that the government would not compromise the integrity of Nigeria’s academic system.

He added that agencies like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), NUC, NBTE, and NCCE are now working together to improve education quality and prevent cases of forgery and unrecognised institutions both in Nigeria and abroad.
