FG to Launch Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) in January 2026
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to roll out the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) in January 2026, a fully digital travel document designed to assist Nigerians abroad who lose their passports.
The announcement was made by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Friday in Abuja during the official unveiling of the ECOWAS Biometric ID Card (ENBIC).
According to the minister, the STEP platform will allow affected Nigerians to generate an emergency travel document directly from their mobile devices, eliminating the need for a physical visit to any Nigerian embassy or consulate.

“This initiative will enable Nigerians abroad who misplace their passports to create an emergency travel document using any mobile device, without visiting an embassy,” Tunji-Ojo said, urging citizens to maintain confidence in government reforms and support ongoing security initiatives.
The STEP system will complement other digital identity upgrades, including the newly launched ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card, which aims to facilitate regional travel and enhance border security.
Earlier in November, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) confirmed that STEP will replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate. The digital passport will be issued at designated embassies and consulates and is valid for single-entry use only.
The move is part of broader immigration reforms aimed at strengthening border management, improving identity verification systems, and aligning Nigeria’s migration processes with global standards.
This initiative marks a significant step toward a digitally enabled travel system for Nigerians, enhancing convenience, security, and emergency mobility abroad.
