FIFA Increases 2026 World Cup Prize Money by 50%, Announces $727 Million Payout

FIFA has confirmed a 50% increase in prize money for teams participating in the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The announcement comes amid backlash over ticket prices for the tournament.

The financial distribution, totaling a record $727 million (£544.8m), includes $50 million (£37.4m) for the champions and $33 million (£24.7m) for the runners-up. Teams eliminated in the group stage will still receive $9 million (£6.7m). Additionally, every eligible team will be awarded $1.5 million (£1.1m) for preparation costs, guaranteeing each participating association at least $10.5 million (£7.8m).

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the payments underscore how the World Cup will be revolutionary for global football finances, projecting record revenues of $13 billion (£9.7bn) for the 2023–2026 period.

The announcement follows FIFA’s launch of £45 tickets for 104 matches, a move aimed at addressing fan concerns over ticket affordability. Tom Greatrex, chair of the Football Supporters’ Association, welcomed the increased prize fund but urged FIFA to act quickly to maintain the tournament’s integrity and accessibility.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also praised the partial price reduction while encouraging further steps to make World Cup tickets more affordable.

FIFA’s council additionally approved the creation of a post-conflict recovery fund to support regions affected by conflict, complementing the FIFA Forward Programme and other initiatives promoting football’s unifying values. The fund will be open to third-party contributions and subject to strict oversight.
