Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has named a former Governor of Borno state, Senator Kashim Shettima, as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu’s action followed the withdrawal from the race of Ibrahim Kabir Masari, who served as a ‘placeholder’ for the VP slot.
Tinubu announced the choice of Shettima on Sunday in Daura, Katsina State, after paying a Sallah visit to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The prospect of a Muslim/Muslim ticket has generated outrage from some quarters, including the APC.
Notwithstanding the opposition, Tinubu settled for Shettima, who was his campaign director general.
Shortly before the announcement of Shettima, Ibrahim Masari, who had hitherto served as a ‘placeholder’ for the VP slot, announced his withdrawal from the position.
Mr Masari said he decided to withdraw from the position after he had a consultation with Mr Tinubu in a letter addressed to APC members.
Shettima is former Governor of Borno State who has been a staunch supporter and campaigner for the choice of Tinubu as the next President of Nigeria, said Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media and Communication
