Finance minister’s Ogun governorship move gains traction

What began as whispers in political corners has quickly evolved into a full-blown conversation dominating Ogun State’s elite gatherings, media spaces, and grassroots discussions.

There are speculations of the governorship ambition of Wale Edun, Nigeria’s current Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Though Edun has remained tight-lipped and has not publicly declared any interest in the 2027 governorship race, insiders say the groundwork is already being laid for his possible candidacy.

A reliable source said Edun may have secured President Tinubu’s blessing and inherited the political structure that brought the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, to power.

“The move is strategic and subtle for now. The groundwork is happening quietly, but steadily. Edun’s camp is watching the political atmosphere closely,” a source told ThisDay.

However, conflicting narratives are also circulating. Another insider dismissed the claims, describing them as unfounded speculation.

According to this version, Edun has no such ambition, and the buzz is being amplified by a lesser-known sociopolitical group aiming to stir public interest.

That group, the Advocates for Ogun Development and Innovations, has been vocal in urging Edun to throw his hat into the ring.

In a public statement, the group described Edun as uniquely qualified to lead Ogun State at this critical period in its development journey.

“Beyond his impressive professional background, Mr. Edun is recognised for his strong dedication to empowering communities, fostering sustainable development, and creating lasting prosperity. We call on him to answer the call of history,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, other contenders like Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as ‘Yayi,’ are believed to be actively eyeing the state’s top seat under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), making the upcoming political battle even more intriguing.
