Fire Destroys Goods Worth Millions in Computer Village, Ikeja

A massive fire gutted a commercial building in Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos, early Tuesday, destroying electronics, laptops, and other goods worth millions of naira, authorities confirmed. The blaze has reignited concerns about fire safety in Nigeria’s largest tech hub.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the fire broke out around 1:55 a.m. at a building on Somoye Osundairo Street, a densely populated area known for trading in computers, accessories, and tech gadgets. Firefighters quickly responded, but the presence of highly flammable materials accelerated the spread, completely gutting the top floor.

No deaths were reported, but a fire officer sustained minor injuries while battling the inferno and received treatment from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). Emergency teams worked to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings in the busy commercial district.

LASEMA confirmed that the cause of the fire is under investigation and urged traders to adhere to fire safety regulations, ensure proper storage of flammable materials, and maintain accessible firefighting equipment in their shops.

This incident adds to a series of destructive fires in Nigerian commercial markets, including recent blazes in Abuja and other parts of Computer Village, which have destroyed property worth hundreds of millions of naira in the past year. Traders lamented the losses, describing the fire as a major setback to their businesses amid rising operational costs.

Authorities have pledged to strengthen fire prevention measures and improve emergency response coordination across Lagos’ commercial hubs to protect lives and property.
