Flying Eagles begin AFCON campaign with 0-1 defeat to Senegal

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles lost 1-0 to the Cubs of Senegal in their opening Group B fixture at the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

The Senegalese started the game brightly on Sunday pushing the Flying Eagles to the defence.

The Nigerians improved as the game developed but failed to carve out any real goal scoring opportunity.

Senegal took the lead through Soulemane Faye five minutes before the break.

Faye fired home after Flying Eagles goalkeeper Nathaniel Nwosu initially pushed the ball away from a fierce low shot.

Ladan Bosso boys failed to threaten the Senegalese goalkeeper, Landing Badji for the majority of the game.

They had once shot on target two minutes from time which was comfortably saved by Badji.

The Flying Eagles finished the game with 10-men after Ahmed Abdullahi was sent off for a terrible foul late in the game.

They will take on hosts Egypt in their next game on Wednesday.
