Former Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam, Resigns from PDP
Former Benue State Governor and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dealing a fresh blow to the opposition party amid its lingering internal crisis.
Suswam’s resignation was contained in a formal letter addressed to his ward leadership in Benue State, where he announced his decision to withdraw from the party he had belonged to for decades. He cited deepening internal divisions, loss of party cohesion, and the inability of the PDP to resolve its leadership challenges as reasons for his exit.
The former governor expressed disappointment over what he described as the persistent erosion of internal democracy within the party, noting that repeated efforts to reconcile aggrieved members and stabilise the PDP had failed. According to him, the party has drifted far from its founding principles, making it difficult for committed members to remain.

Suswam, who governed Benue State from 2007 to 2015 and later represented Benue North-East Senatorial District, played key roles in the PDP at both state and national levels. His departure adds to the growing list of high-profile defections that have weakened the party in recent months.
Although Suswam did not immediately announce his next political move, his resignation has sparked speculation about a possible defection to another political party or a strategic political realignment ahead of future elections.
Political observers say the exit of the former governor underscores the deepening crisis within the PDP, especially in Benue State, where factional disputes and leadership tussles have continued to threaten the party’s structure.
As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership in Benue State and at the national level has not issued an official response to Suswam’s resignation.
