Four Rivers Lawmakers Reverse Position, Rejoin Push to Impeach Governor Fubara

The political crisis in Rivers State has taken a dramatic turn as four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who earlier called for restraint have reversed their stance and now insist on proceeding with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers — Sylvanus Nwankwo, Peter Abbey, Barile Nwakoh and Emilia Amadi — announced their decision at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, withdrawing their previous appeal for dialogue and reconciliation. They accused the governor of failing to show remorse or respect for the legislature, insisting that the impeachment process remains the only constitutional option left.

According to them, their earlier call for peace was misinterpreted as weakness, while alleged media attacks against the Assembly and continued executive actions further deepened mistrust. As a result, they said they had fully realigned with colleagues pushing for the impeachment process against Fubara to continue without delay.

The development strengthens the position of the Assembly leadership, which maintains that the impeachment notice — already backed by more than two-thirds of lawmakers — is lawful. The allegations against the governor and his deputy include gross misconduct, alleged unconstitutional spending, and actions viewed as undermining the independence of the legislature.

The renewed push comes amid heightened political tension in the oil-rich state, despite earlier intervention efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other political stakeholders. Several mediation attempts have failed, with both the executive and legislative arms holding firmly to their positions.

While supporters of the Assembly argue that impeachment is necessary to uphold constitutional order, critics warn that the move could worsen instability and disrupt governance in the state.
