Four Teenagers Killed in Banki Explosion as Borno Police Probe Deadly IED Blast

The Borno State Police Command has opened an investigation into a tragic IED explosion in Banki, Bama Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of four teenagers and left another seriously injured.

Police spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed that the incident occurred behind the Banki Motor Park in Wajari Ward when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated. The victims were identified as Awana Mustapha (15), Malum Modu (14), Lawan Ibrahim (12), and Modu Abacha (12).

According to the police report, the boys were playing with the device, reportedly picked up in the bush, when it exploded. Daso revealed that the police received a distress report from a resident, Babagana Mohammed, at about 1:00 p.m., prompting immediate action by the Divisional Police Officer and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians, who cordoned off the area.

A fifth boy, Mustapha Tijja, aged 12, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the FHI 360 NGO clinic in Banki. Investigations suggest the children had gathered in a makeshift room behind the motor park, where the device went off.

The police assured residents that normalcy has returned to the community. Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid extended condolences to the bereaved families and cautioned the public, especially children, to avoid handling strange or suspicious objects.

He urged residents to immediately report any findings of suspected explosive devices to the nearest police formation to prevent further tragedies.
