Fresh protest creates tension in Kano
Tension is brewing in Kano State as workers in the Dakata/Sauna Small Scale Enterprises (SMEs) area of Nassarawa Local Government took to the streets in protest over what they are calling a “crippling” electricity tariff hike.
The recent increase, allegedly imposed by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), has sparked outrage and fear among the local business community.
Chanting slogans and holding placards, the workers expressed their anger, warning that the sudden tariff increase could force many SMEs to shut down, throwing countless families into financial crisis.
“Our livelihoods are under attack!” cried Aisha Abdullahi, one of the female protesters, who passionately voiced the concerns of those affected. “For five days now, we haven’t been able to work, and if this continues, we will be pushed out completely. The authorities need to intervene before it’s too late!”

Isma’ila Shehu Dakata, a prominent SME operator, described the tariff hike as “inhumane,” stating that the exorbitant 300% increase is simply unaffordable in the current economic climate. “Imagine a 300% hike amidst this economic hardship. It lacks any sense of compassion. We are being pushed out of business!” he exclaimed, hinting at the potential collapse of many SMEs in the area.
The local government has promised to step in, with Zilkifilu Alhassan, the Kano State Government representative in the area, vowing to address the issue. “We will ensure that the state government intervenes,” he pleaded, urging business owners not to shut down their operations.
As frustration grows, efforts to get a response from KEDCO have so far been unsuccessful, adding to the mounting tension. Workers and SME operators are now anxiously waiting to see if the authorities will heed their desperate call for a review of the new tariff, which they claim is strangling the lifeblood of their businesses.
Newstrends reports that Kano had last month witnessed violent #EndBadGovernance protest, which resulted in the imposition of 24-hour curfew by the Kano government.
