FRSC denies seeking permission to carry firearms

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has denied claims of making a fresh request for its personnel to carry firearms to enhance their security in view of increasing insecurity situation in the nation.

Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dauda Biu, was earlier reportedly said the commission was seeking the permission of the Federal Government to bear arms.

The call was made during the inauguration of 1,762 corps personnel who had just completed a four-month introductory course at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) in Kontagora, Niger State.

Biu was represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Shehu Zaki and highlighted that granting the FRSC personnel the authority to bear arms would offer better protection, especially as they often face attacks from some road users as well as suspected criminals who exploit the prevailing security challenges.

However, in a statement on Sunday by Bisi Kazeem, Assistant Corps Marshal/ Corps Public Education Officer of the FRSC said the Corps Marshal and the management team disowned such claims.

He said in the statement sent to Newstrends, “The attention of the FRSC has just been drawn to a report that the Corps Marshal is seeking the permission of the Federal Government for the personnel of the Corps to bear arms.

“The said eronous statement credited to the representative of the Corps Marshal at the Passing Out Parade of Cadets at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), Kotangora, Niger State, does not reflect the current position of the Corps Marshal and the management team.

“Members of the public should therefore take note .”
