FUTA workers protest over outstanding four-month salary
Members of non-teaching staff at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) have staged a peaceful protest to demand the release of their four months’ salaries withheld by the federal government since 2022.
The protesters led by the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU) did a sit-out at the entrance gate of the institution.
They carried placards and chanted solidarity songs along the Akure-Ibadan highway but did not obstruct the flow of traffic.
Inscriptions on the placards read: “FG we are hungry,” “No double standard, pay us our withered salaries.” “FG, stop victimizing SSANU, non-teaching staff.” “Pay a living wage to workers as promised.”

Chairman of Joint Negotiating Council (JAC) FUTA, Comrade Felix Adubi, said the protesting unions could no longer guarantee industrial harmony in Nigerian universities.
Comrade Adubi said only one union was paid out of the four unions that went on strike in 2022 and whose salaries were withheld.
He said: “The divide and rule system of government is not acceptable to us. We are calling on Mr. President to make good his promise. We are pleading with Mr. President to do the needful before the final straw.
“Mr. President has promised there will be no crisis in the Nigeria Universities. We can no longer guarantee industrial harmony if Mr. President fails to do the needful.”
