Gamba Osaka Shock Al Nassr As Ronaldo’s Trophy Drought Continues
Cristiano Ronaldo’s search for his first major trophy with Al Nassr suffered another setback after the Saudi Arabian side were defeated 1–0 by Japan’s Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final.
Al Nassr went into the final as strong favourites following an impressive run to the title decider, having recorded a dominant winning streak throughout the competition and arriving with one of the most star-studded squads in Asian football.
However, the final in Riyadh produced a major upset as Gamba Osaka executed a disciplined and compact tactical plan that frustrated the Saudi Pro League side for long periods.
The Japanese club relied on structured defending, quick transitions and an outstanding goalkeeping display from Araki, who made several key saves to deny Al Nassr’s attacking trio.
After a goalless first half, Gamba Osaka struck the decisive blow shortly after the restart when Hummet finished clinically to give the J1 League side a shock lead.
Al Nassr responded with sustained pressure in search of an equaliser, with João Félix coming close and Ronaldo heavily involved in attacking phases as he attempted to drag his team back into the contest.

Despite late pressure and multiple attempts inside the final third, Gamba Osaka held firm, defending deep and showing composure to protect their lead until the final whistle.
The result handed Gamba Osaka the AFC Champions League Two title and ended Al Nassr’s hopes of securing continental silverware this season.
For Ronaldo, the defeat extends his wait for a major trophy in Saudi Arabia since joining Al Nassr in 2023, despite maintaining strong individual goal-scoring form and leading the team’s attack in multiple competitions.
The loss is particularly painful for Al Nassr, who entered the competition with expectations of lifting the trophy after a dominant campaign and heavy investment in their squad, which includes several European stars.
Since moving to Saudi Arabia following his departure from Manchester United, Ronaldo has continued to break scoring records but has yet to secure a major official team trophy with Al Nassr, increasing scrutiny on the club’s ability to deliver in decisive matches.
Football analysts noted that while Al Nassr controlled possession for large spells, their lack of clinical finishing in key moments ultimately proved costly against a well-organised Gamba Osaka side.
The result has sparked widespread reaction from fans on social media, with many highlighting the growing competitiveness of Asian club football and the ability of Japanese teams to challenge financially stronger opponents through tactical discipline and teamwork.
