Ghana orders evacuation of citizens from Iran, closes embassy
The Government of Ghana has ordered the immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
According to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Monday, the decision includes the closure of Ghana’s embassy in Tehran, effective immediately.
He said the decision is part of urgent measures to protect the lives of Ghanaians in the region.
“In light of the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict, the Mahama administration has taken the difficult but necessary step to evacuate all Ghanaians residing in Iran,” the statement read.
As part of the evacuation effort, all embassy staff, students, professionals, and other Ghanaian nationals are being moved out of Iran via nearby land borders.

Ablakwa also noted that developments in Israel are being closely monitored, and additional safety directives will follow.
“In the meantime, we have scaled down operations at our embassy in Tel Aviv to essential services only. Ghanaians in Israel are advised to remain in constant contact with our consular services,” he said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to citizen safety, assuring that “every necessary action is being taken to keep Ghanaians safe and out of harm’s way.”
The minister also repeated Ghana’s appeal for calm and diplomacy, urging both Iran and Israel to de-escalate tensions and seek peaceful resolutions through dialogue.
