Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday, countered the claims that Governor Udom Emmanuel is making subtle and clandestine move to defect to the All Progressives Congress.
It said people were using it to draw attention to themselves.
Speculations were rife months ago in the State that Gov. Emmanuel had concluded plan to join the ruling APC at the centre but he came out to debunk the rumour assuring the people that he would remain in PDP.
But just last Saturday, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Ita Enang had, while speaking on Talk-Radio show of the Inspiration FM, Uyo, the State capital, claimed that the Governor is making moves to join the APC.
Enang cited the Governor’s recent romance with APC stakeholders, including the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan, who were in the State for projects commissioning, as an indication that “Udom Emmanuel is now a member of the APC”
But reacting to Enang’s claim in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Borono Bassey said he was not surprised at the rumour, adding that APC is always struggling to have a performing Governor, like Udom Emmanuel in order to validate its failure in the State
He said “the truth is that the Governor has said it over and over again and as a party, we have made releases that the Governor is not going anywhere. I like to think that people just want to draw attention to themselves because they know that people will be interested in hearing about this.
“I understand too that when you think of the fact that the Governor, Udom Emmanuel is a performing Governor, the APC would want to have someone like him to validate themselves because everyone knows that they are a failure and they will need someone that is performing to come over.”
