Gridlock, panic as trailer falls on Abuja major road

Commuters along the Kubwa Expressway faced major delay on Monday morning after a trailer fell and blocked the busy route, leading to a serious gridlock.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident and swiftly moved its personnel in to manage the situation.

Speaking to reporters, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sector Commander of the FRSC, Felix Theman, said the accident, caused by a tyre failure, led to the trailer toppling over and obstructing multiple lanes on the expressway.

“There’s currently a gridlock because there’s no free flow of traffic, as a section of the expressway has been blocked by the fallen trailer.

“However, our officers are fully on ground, ensuring that motorists use the available service lane and the one or two lanes that are still accessible,” Theman said.

He appealed to road users to remain calm and cooperative, stressing that the situation could worsen if drivers acted impatiently or disregarded instructions.

“It’s crucial that drivers exercise patience and cooperate with the officers on ground. Indiscipline, impatience, and lack of cooperation could compound the current traffic situation,” he warned.

Theman also confirmed that the FRSC had contacted a towing service to remove the trailer.

“We’ve engaged the relevant towing company, Debasid, and their tow truck is already on its way to the scene. In no time, we hope to remove the trailer and restore normal traffic flow,” he said.

The trailer crash did not result in any fatalities, though minor injuries were reported.

As of 10.30am, efforts to clear the obstruction were still ongoing, and traffic remained slow in both directions.
