Guimaraes strikes late as Newcastle edge Fulham at St. James’ Park

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes delivered a dramatic 90th-minute winner on Saturday to seal a 2–1 victory over Fulham and extend the visitors’ losing streak to four matches.

The Magpies looked set to settle for a draw until Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno parried a shot from substitute William Osula into the path of Guimaraes, who made no mistake from close range.

Earlier, Jacob Murphy had opened scoring for Newcastle with his first goal of the season, capitalising on a defensive error by Calvin Bassey. But Fulham responded through Sasa Lukic, who nodded home after Raul Jimenez’s volley struck the crossbar and bounced kindly inside the box.

Despite missing key players — including Antonee Robinson, Joachim Andersen, Samuel Chukwueze, Harry Wilson, and Rodrigo Muniz — Fulham showed resilience and threatened to snatch a point, with Jimenez and Lukic combining well in attack.

Newcastle, however, pushed for a winner and were rewarded late on, building on their midweek Champions League triumph over Benfica. Substitutes Anthony Elanga and Osula played pivotal roles in the decisive goal, injecting energy into a side that had struggled to maintain control after taking the lead.

Nick Woltemade, who has scored four of Newcastle’s last five Premier League goals, was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, hitting the woodwork early in the match.

Fulham manager Marco Silva will take positives from his side’s spirited response, especially after their lacklustre showing against Arsenal. But with a crucial fixture against Wolves at Craven Cottage looming, the pressure is mounting.

Last season, Fulham staged a comeback win at St. James’ Park. This time, they were undone by a late strike.
