Gunmen Attack Abuja‑Bound Bus in Kogi, Five Killed, Several Abducted
At least five passengers were killed and several others abducted after armed gunmen attacked a commercial bus travelling from Abuja to Ilesha, Osun State, along the Oshokoshoko–Agbede Highway in Kogi State.
The attack occurred early Friday morning, around 12:10 a.m., targeting an 18‑seater Toyota bus with registration number HJA 687 YD. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen blocked the highway and opened fire on the bus, leaving passengers in panic.
Security sources confirmed that the bodies of five victims were recovered at the scene and deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital mortuary in Lokoja, the state capital. One passenger, Naziru Aliyu, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to Fisayo Hospital for treatment.

Authorities also revealed that 14 passengers were rescued during bush combing and intelligence-led operations. Survivors include Qorib Akere, Hamsatu Umar, Maryam Abubakar, Alpha Abdullateef, Alpha Uammi Adamu, Sanni Yahaya, Engr. Wojuola Olajide, Ademola Ibrahim, Fidelis Ajeh, Musa Muhammed, Nehemiah Gyang, Kanini Moses, and Simon Obadiah. Security officials noted that four passengers remain unaccounted for, feared abducted by the attackers.
The Kogi State Police Command and other security agencies have intensified operations along the highway to apprehend the gunmen and secure the release of the missing passengers. Residents have been urged to exercise caution while travelling, particularly during night hours.
This incident highlights growing concerns over highway insecurity in Kogi State, with frequent reports of kidnapping and armed ambushes targeting travellers. Security agencies have reassured the public of their commitment to protecting lives and property and bringing perpetrators to justice.
