Suspected gunmen have killed three policemen and set their vehicle ablaze during a gun battle in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 3.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police public relations officer, confirmed that two officers had been killed, though a local resident reported that three officers had lost their lives.

According to the resident, after killing the officers, the gunmen proceeded to burn their vehicle.

Nnewi and surrounding areas have been dealing with a rise in violence, including killings and kidnappings, over the past year. The police have been actively engaged in addressing the security challenges in the region.

In a statement released in Awka on Thursday, Superintendent Ikenga announced that the Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with the Joint Security Forces (JSF), has launched a manhunt to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
