Haaland scores as Man City outclass Villarreal 2-0

VILLARREAL — Erling Haaland continued his blistering form on Tuesday night, scoring for the 12th consecutive match to help Manchester City secure a 2-0 victory over Villarreal and end their year-long winless run in Champions League away fixtures.

The Norwegian striker opened the scoring with a clinical first-time finish, racing ahead of defender Juan Foyth to convert Rico Lewis’ low cross. The goal marked Haaland’s 24th in just 14 appearances this season for club and country.

City dominated the first half, with early chances falling to Haaland and winger Jeremy Doku, whose low strike was parried by Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior. Bernardo Silva doubled the lead before halftime, heading home from Savinho’s pinpoint cross.

Villarreal responded after the break, with Pape Gueye forcing a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma and Renato Veiga striking the post late on. Despite their efforts, the Spanish side failed to break through City’s defense.

The win extended City’s unbeaten run in all competitions to nine matches and lifted them to fifth place in their Champions League group, with two wins and a draw from three outings. It also marked their first European away win since a 4-0 triumph over Slovan Bratislava on October 1, 2024.

Haaland’s affinity for Spanish opposition was evident once again; he has now scored nine goals in nine appearances against La Liga sides. Manager Pep Guardiola also maintained his perfect record against Villarreal, having never lost in nine meetings.

Villarreal, currently third in La Liga behind Real Madrid and Barcelona, have struggled in Europe this season, losing all three of their group stage matches. Despite flashes of promise, including their 2021 Europa League final win over Manchester United, Marcelino’s squad faces an uphill battle to advance.

City’s next European away fixture will be against Real Madrid in December—a crucial test as they aim to build on their improved continental form following last season’s early playoff exit.
