Heavy Security at Kano Govt House Amid Governor Abba Yusuf’s Rumoured APC Defection
Kano, Nigeria — Heavy security measures were observed at the Kano State Government House on Monday as speculation grows over a potential defection by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Eyewitnesses reported the presence of combined security operatives, including personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), stationed at strategic points around the Government House. At least seven Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) were deployed at key access points, including the main entrance and the roundabout leading to the premises.
Security checks were intensified, with staff, visitors, and journalists subjected to strict identification procedures before entry. Observers described the move as a precautionary measure by security agencies in response to the sensitive nature of a sitting governor potentially switching political parties.

Although Governor Yusuf — elected under the NNPP platform in the 2023 Kano gubernatorial elections — has not officially announced any defection, political speculations have dominated discussions in the state capital. Analysts say that a move to the APC could significantly reshape political dynamics in Kano and northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The rumoured defection has sparked tensions within the NNPP, with state leaders publicly distancing themselves from the speculation and reaffirming loyalty to party leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The NNPP’s state chairman described any move as a “gross betrayal,” highlighting internal party rifts.
As of Monday, security operatives remained on high alert, while normal government activities continued. Residents and political watchers continue to await an official statement from Governor Yusuf regarding his political intentions.
