House of Representatives Sets Up Committee to Probe Discrepancies in Gazetted Tax Bills

Abuja, Nigeria — The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, on Thursday inaugurated a seven-member ad-hoc committee to investigate alleged discrepancies between tax bills passed by the National Assembly and the versions subsequently gazetted.

The committee will be chaired by Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, with members including former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase, Sada Soli, James Abiodun Faleke, Fred Agbedi, Babajimi Benson, and Iduma Igariwey.

The probe follows a Point of Privilege raised by Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto) on Wednesday, who alleged that the gazetted tax laws did not reflect the content of the bills as debated, voted on, and passed by the National Assembly.

Dasuki told the House that, after carefully reviewing the Votes and Proceedings and harmonised versions of the tax bills, he discovered inconsistencies with the gazetted copies obtained from the Ministry of Information. He warned that circulating laws different from those duly passed would undermine the integrity of the legislature and violate constitutional provisions.

The Speaker assured lawmakers that the matter had been taken seriously and that the ad-hoc committee would scrutinize all relevant documents, including harmonised versions, votes, proceedings, and gazetted copies, to resolve the discrepancies and ensure transparency.
