Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume
House of Reps Dismisses Ndume’s Tax Law Allegations as “Sheer Mischief”
The House of Representatives has strongly rejected comments by Senator Ali Ndume alleging irregularities in Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws, describing the claims as “sheer mischief” capable of misleading the public and undermining confidence in the National Assembly.
Reacting to the senator’s remarks, the Deputy Spokesman of the House, Philip Agbese, said suggestions that the tax laws were altered or falsified after being passed by lawmakers were baseless and irresponsible.
According to Agbese, the tax reform bills went through all required legislative procedures, including scrutiny, debate, harmonisation, and final approval by both chambers of the National Assembly before being signed into law.
He warned that spreading allegations of document manipulation without evidence could create unnecessary tension, fuel public distrust, and weaken democratic institutions.

Agbese insisted that any genuine concerns about the laws should be addressed through established parliamentary mechanisms rather than public accusations that, in his words, amount to “sheer mischief.”
The House spokesman disclosed that a review committee has already been set up to address concerns and clarify grey areas in the tax legislation, stressing that this demonstrates the lawmakers’ commitment to transparency and accountability.
Senator Ndume had earlier claimed that there were multiple versions of the tax laws, raising concerns over what he described as inconsistencies between the copies passed by lawmakers and those presented to the public.
However, the House maintained that such claims risk misinforming Nigerians, urging citizens to await the outcome of the review process instead of drawing premature conclusions.
The controversy comes amid heightened public debate over the new tax regime, which aims to reform revenue collection and strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal framework.
