How 6-year single term for president will end political tension – Kalu
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North and a member of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review and Amendment, has called on the National Assembly to consider a six-year single term for Nigeria’s President and state governors.
In a video message shared via his official Facebook page on Sunday, October 19, 2025, Kalu argued that the proposed reform would reduce political tension, curb corruption, and enhance governance. “Let everybody who is coming know that he is just coming for a six-year single term, and there will be no rancour or problems,” he said.
Kalu urged his colleagues in both chambers of the National Assembly to unite behind the proposal, which he believes would allow leaders to focus on delivering public service rather than campaigning for re-election. He suggested the reform could take effect in either 2027 or 2031, depending on legislative consensus.

The senator also criticized Nigeria’s adoption of the American-style presidential system, saying it places undue strain on the country’s economy and encourages wealth accumulation among officeholders seeking a second term. “We must not do what the American Constitution is saying. We are in a developing country,” he stated.
Kalu emphasized that his proposal is not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He maintained that a single term would promote accountability and ensure leaders prioritize citizens’ welfare.
The idea of a single tenure has surfaced in Nigeria’s political discourse before, notably during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011. While critics argue it limits voters’ ability to re-elect effective leaders, supporters say it could reduce election costs and discourage manipulation of the electoral process.
Kalu concluded by reaffirming his commitment to speaking truthfully and advocating for reforms that benefit Nigerians. “We have to stand up to speak the truth,” he said. “I want the Nigerian people to have the enjoyment of democracy.”
