Details have emerged on how a private car driver fleeing from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority crushed to death two sanitation staff of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority.

The incident occurred in the early hors of Monday at Charlie Boy Bus Stop on Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway.

According to eyewitness accounts, the driver, who immediately fled the scene after knocking the sweepers into the drainage beside them, lost control of the vehicle.

One of the eyewitnesses said: “This was because he was on top speed in order to evade the LASTMA officials who were giving him a hot chase.

“On getting to the scene of the accident, the LASTMA officials, who were also on high speed, did not bother to stop.

“I am sure they knew if they had stopped, they would have been beaten to death.

“The sweepers are on that road every morning doing their work meticulously.

“May their souls rest in peace.”

Another eyewitness said it appears that the ban on chasing on vehicles by operatives of LASTMA is always observed in the breach.

The eyewitness said: “I am aware that the Management of LASTMA has said no one should be chased again because of incidents like this.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also tried by providing these guys with the required gadgets.

“Only God knows why they still engage in this practice if not for extortion.”

Traffic snarls followed the incident, with many trapped for several hours.

A protest was almost going to erupt at the scene.

It took the intervention of policemen who had to use teargas to disperse the crowd.
