I don’t want to be remembered for fighting people – Obaseki

I don’t want to be remembered for fighting people – Obaseki

Outgoing Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has declared emphatically that he does not want to be remembered for all the quarrels he had with many people in the state.

He stated this on Friday at the commissioning of Airport Road Parks and Gardens, located not too far from the exit gate of the Benin Airport.

He was approached by journalists to comment on how he would want to be remembered after eight years as governor, Obaseki simply replied “certainly not for the fights”.

Obaseki is expected to hand over to the Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in 10 days (12 November).

He fought many political battles towards the end of his first term in office.

A stiff opposition from his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, who was then national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), forced him out of the party.

Obaseki defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which he got re-elected as governor.

He later fell out with some powerful state leaders of the party.

Many people are of the opinion that his fight with members of the Legacy Group caucus in the PDP, led by Chief Dan Orbih, truncated his ambition to produce a successor.

Meanwhile, the governor in commissioning the Airport Road Park and Garden named it Prestige Park, after Prestige Hotel that directly faces the park.

He also disclosed that his government had “created a model” to manage and maintain it.

According to him, all revenues generated from the billboards from the area would pay for its maintenance.

He also said the Military Hospital and Prestige Hotel facing the facility would provide security and community support respectively.
