A former deputy president of the Senate, Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu, is dead.
Mantu, who was Plateau Central Senator reportedly died in the wee hours of Tuesday.
A source close to the family said Mantu died in an Abuja hospital after 10 days of illness,
The source said he would be buried today.
He was born on February 16, 1947 in Chanso village of the Mangu Local Government of Plateau State.
Mantu joined politics in 1978. He was elected Deputy State Chairman of the defunct National Party of Nigeria in Plateau State in 1980.
In 1999, he was appointed Chairman Senate Committee on Information, the position he held till August 10, 2001, when he was elected deputy president of the Senate.
