IED Scare in Niger State as Farmers Discover Explosives on Farmland Paths
Residents of Ganaru community in Zugurma District, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, narrowly escaped tragedy on Tuesday after three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were discovered along farm paths leading to the area.
The explosives were spotted by villagers heading to their farms, who immediately raised the alarm. Security agencies were promptly alerted, leading to the cordoning off of the affected area and preventing casualties or destruction of property.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Mashegu Local Government, Alhaji Jibrin Egade, described the discovery as “shocking and strange,” while commending the vigilance of community members for averting a possible disaster.

The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Mr. Adamu Elleman, also confirmed the development, noting that bomb disposal experts had been deployed to the scene and that the situation was fully under control.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Farouk Shaibu, reassured residents of the Nigerian Army’s commitment to eliminating terrorist threats, banditry, and other forms of insecurity across Niger State and other affected regions.
Speaking at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff Conference at the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in Minna, Lt. Gen. Shaibu said the military was acting on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure criminals are brought to justice.
“We will massively deploy troops across the country to make Nigeria safer for all law-abiding citizens. Technology is being integrated into our operations to ensure efficiency in combating these threats,” he said.
The annual TRADOC conference serves as a platform to review military operations, gather feedback from the field, and shape strategies for the coming year. The Commander of TRADOC, Major General Peter Malla, described the meeting as crucial to building a modern, agile, and doctrinally grounded Nigerian Army capable of addressing evolving security challenges.
