Igboho Calls for Approval of “Iru Ekun Security Network” After Oyo School Attack

Igboho Calls for Approval of “Iru Ekun Security Network” After Oyo School Attack

Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has renewed his call on the Federal Government and South-West governors to urgently approve a proposed regional security initiative following the abduction of pupils and teachers at Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, in Oyo State.

The attack, which reportedly involved the kidnapping of students and teachers, including the killing of a teacher identified as Michael Oyedokun, has sparked fresh outrage and intensified concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of South-West Nigeria.

In a statement, Igboho expressed sympathy with the families of the victims and described the incident as “sad, unfortunate, and worrisome,” particularly given the continued vulnerability of rural communities to armed attacks and kidnappings.

He said he has already completed preparations for the launch of a proposed security initiative known as the Iru Ekun Security Network, which he claims is designed to combat criminal groups operating in forests across Yorubaland.

According to him, the initiative targets armed criminals he described as bandits, kidnappers and “rogue herders” allegedly operating in forest reserves across the South-West and neighbouring areas.

Igboho, however, stressed that he would not proceed with any operation without formal approval from relevant authorities, including the Federal Government, South-West governors, and security agencies such as the Police, the Department of State Services, and the military.

He said the aim of seeking approval is to ensure coordination with official security structures and avoid operating outside the law.

“I don’t want to start our strategically mapped out onslaught against these criminals without the official approval from the Federal Government, South-West governors and relevant security stakeholders,” he stated.

The activist added that the latest abduction underscores the urgent need for a more proactive security response, especially in rural communities where residents have repeatedly faced attacks.

He also called on traditional rulers in the region to intervene by urging government authorities to speed up approval for the proposed security outfit, saying such a structure could help restore confidence among farmers and rural dwellers.

Igboho warned that continued delays in addressing insecurity could further endanger lives and worsen displacement in farming communities across the South-West and parts of Kwara State.

The renewed call adds to ongoing national debates about the creation of state or regional policing structures in Nigeria, as insecurity continues to affect multiple regions of the country.

Security concerns in the South-West have persisted in recent years, with repeated reports of kidnappings along highways, attacks on rural settlements, and farmer-herder clashes in some communities.

Igboho insisted that the proposed Iru Ekun Security Network would complement existing security agencies rather than replace them, saying it is aimed at improving rapid response and intelligence gathering in forested and hard-to-reach areas.
