Impeachment Uncertain as Rivers Lawmakers Stay Away from Plenary

Uncertainty continues to trail the ongoing impeachment proceedings in Rivers State as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly failed to reconvene for plenary, raising fresh questions over the fate of the move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had earlier adjourned sitting after issuing a notice of impeachment over alleged gross misconduct, including claims of unauthorized expenditure and the demolition of the Assembly complex. The House was expected to reconvene to advance the process, but journalists who visited the Assembly’s temporary complex along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, found the chamber deserted.

No official explanation was given for the lawmakers’ absence, nor was a new date announced for resumption, further throwing the impeachment process into uncertainty.

The development comes amid deepening divisions within the Assembly, with several lawmakers reportedly withdrawing their support for the impeachment move. Some legislators have openly called for dialogue and reconciliation, warning that the crisis could further destabilize governance in the oil-rich Rivers State.

Civil society organisations and political stakeholders have also expressed concern, cautioning that the stalemate could heighten political tension in the state. Some groups have reportedly threatened recall actions against lawmakers backing the impeachment, describing the move as politically motivated.

The failure to reconvene has intensified speculation that the impeachment may struggle to secure the required legislative backing, as cracks widen within the House.

As the political drama unfolds, residents and observers continue to watch closely, awaiting clarity on whether the Rivers State House of Assembly will resume sitting or allow the impeachment proceedings to stall indefinitely.
