Imported Petrol Cheaper Than Dangote Fuel as Landing Costs Drop

Imported Petrol Cheaper Than Dangote Fuel as Landing Costs Drop

The landing cost of imported petrol has fallen below the pump supply price offered by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, marking a notable shift in Nigeria’s deregulated fuel market.

Industry data from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) shows that the landing cost of imported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) dropped to about ₦728 per litre, undercutting the Dangote Refinery ex-gantry price of ₦799 per litre.

The development means that, at current rates, imported petrol is cheaper than locally refined fuel at the point of supply, a reversal of expectations that domestic refining would consistently deliver lower prices.

Market analysts attribute the price gap to a combination of lower international fuel prices, improved shipping costs, and short-term exchange rate movements, which have reduced the cost of petrol imports in recent weeks.

Despite the price difference, stakeholders note that Dangote Refinery remains critical to Nigeria’s long-term goal of fuel self-sufficiency, reduced foreign exchange pressure, and energy security. However, the cheaper landing cost could encourage some oil marketers to resume petrol imports, depending on logistics and profit margins.

The situation highlights the volatile nature of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, where prices are increasingly shaped by global market forces rather than government controls.
