Impressive Ashe, Nwokocha, hit 100m semifinals

Nigeria’s fastest man and woman, Favour Ashe and Grace Nwokocha have led four others to the semifinal of the 100m of athletics at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Ashe, who is one of the fastest runners in action with 9.99secs won Heat 1 with a time of 10.12secs, Ekevwo won Heat 4 with 10.14secs to hit the semifinal, while Brume finished among the fastest time to pick a place in the semifinal after finishing third with 10.36secs.

In the women’s 100m event, Nwokocha won in 10.99secs while Joy Udo-Gabriel picked her slot in the semifinal after finishing third in her heat with a time of 12.43secs being her season’s best (SB). Rosemary Chukwuma booked her place in the semifinal after winning Heat 4 with a time of 11.02.

In the first men’s semifinal, Brume will face the likes of South Africa’s Akani Simbine whose personal best (PB) of 9.84secs remains the best in the line-up.

Ashe who has the second fastest time in the line-up will face a tough task against Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala whose PB remains 9.77secs.

In the third semifinal Okevwo will face three sub 9 secs in Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati, Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon and England’s Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake.

The semifinal and finals are scheduled for today at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

Meanwhile,  Nigeria’s Orobosa Anabel Frank threw 16.27m to qualify for the final of women’s shot-put event.
