Insecurity: NSCDC arrests seven suspects for producing illegal weapons in Abuja
Men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have foiled attempts by some persons to begin the production of locally-made rifles and pistols in Abuja.
A statement by the NSCDC National Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, said the NSCDC Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation put the suspects under Surveillance and Monitoring and were able to apprehend them.
The statement reads: “Acting on a tip-off that a group of individuals were manufacturing semi-automatic rifles and pistols at Moshood Abiola National Stadium area in Abuja, the Directorate acted swiftly and arrested seven suspects. They are Amos Iyawo (29), Jonah Mannaseh (27), Ezekiel Nannim (20), Naifa Pando (F, 26), Euphemia Peter (26), Faith Gadang (F) and Philemon Karam (F, 26).
“Their confessional statements identified Iyawo as the team leader and who recruited others. He also said none of the rifles or pistols have been sold as production just began.
“One of the suspects also confessed that he found the locally made pistol while on operations with the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) at Durumi in Abuja.”

Afolabi added that items recovered from them were five already fabricated rifles, one pistols, one unfinished rifle, seven empty cartridges, two boots, rods, welding machine, filling machine, two searchlights, three pliers, shovel, cutlass and axes, hunters ID card and belt and other exhibits.
He said the suspects would be handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
Operatives of the NSCDC in Ondo State also arrested an alleged kidnapper, Dairu Abdullahi, at Eti-Ose River Forest, Owol Local Government Area.
Abdullahi was arrested after a gun duel. The NSCDC operatives stormed the forest in response to a distress call.
It was gathered that Dairu and his gang collected N6.2 million ransom from their recent victim before he was arrested.
Also arrested was one Uyobon Jim who served as informant to the kidnappers. He was also engaged in marijuana cultivation.
Spokesman of the Ondo NSCDC, Aidamenbor Daniel, said another three suspected kidnappers were arrested at Abusoro camp, Ipele Forest Reserve, Owo council while attempting to kidnap their victim. He gave their names as Isiaku Jubril (37), Nura Idris (30) and Mohammed Sulieman (50).
Items recovered from the suspects include two locally made guns, three cutlasses, four mobile phones, and one NYSC uniform.
He said the suspects would be prosecuted after investigations have been concluded while the narcotic suspect would be handed over to the NDLEA.
