Senator Orji Uzor Kalu
IPOB rejects Kalu’s claim that 30,000 died in South-East over Nnamdi Kanu activism
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dismissed claims by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu that over 30,000 people have died due to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s activism in Nigeria’s South-East, calling the statement “false” and “irresponsible.”
Senator Kalu, representing Abia North, made the assertion on Channels Television’s Politics Today, claiming that secessionist agitations linked to the convicted IPOB leader caused extensive fatalities and economic losses in the region.
Reacting, IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful rejected the figure and demanded evidence to substantiate the senator’s claims. He stated that the fatalities and destruction in the South-East were orchestrated by the Federal Government and certain politicians, not IPOB or Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“IPOB and its leader have remained non-violent despite military operations targeting their members,” Powerful said, urging impartial investigations into violence in the South-East since 2015. He added that the Federal Government has yet to allow an independent inquiry.
“Senator Kalu must provide proof of his assertions. As far as IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu are concerned, we bear no responsibility for the death of any individual or damage to businesses in the East,” the statement read.
Senator Kalu’s remarks followed Kanu’s conviction on terrorism-related charges. The former Abia governor stressed the need for political solutions over public agitation and encouraged a holistic approach in resolving the crisis in the region.
