Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer whose name became synonymous with elegance, sophistication, and modern Italian style, has died at the age of 91, his company announced on Thursday.

Though unwell in recent months, Armani remained deeply involved in his business until the end, reports Reuters. In June, for the first time in his career, he missed Milan Men’s Fashion Week, a decision that underscored the seriousness of his health struggles.
He was the sole owner of his company, working closely with a loyal circle of family and longtime colleagues.
“We, the employees and family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love,” the company said.
Armani was known to personally oversee not only his collections but also advertising, stage design, and even the appearance of models before they stepped onto the runway.
The company said a funeral chamber will be set up in Milan this weekend, with a private funeral to follow at a later date.
