JAC urges FG to sign auto policy into law, applauds LSM local assembly drive
JAC Motors, one of China’s leading global truck manufacturers, has called on the Federal Government to urgently sign Nigeria’s automotive policy into law, emphasizing its importance in attracting foreign investment, boosting local vehicle assembly, and reducing dependence on imported used vehicles.
This appeal was made by Mr. Oscar Yu, General Manager of JAC Motors, during a recent strategic visit to Lanre Shittu Motors’ JAC truck assembly facility along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.
Yu commended Lanre Shittu Motors (LSM) for its resilience and dedication to local vehicle assembly amid Nigeria’s economic challenges, describing the company as a “strong and reliable partner.”
He stated that a well-structured and legislated automotive policy would incentivize Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to invest in Nigeria, ultimately making brand-new, affordable trucks more accessible to consumers.
“We are ready to collaborate closely with the Nigerian government to grow the auto sector,” Yu said. “Signing this policy into law would provide stability for investors and foster increased local production.”
Highlighting the vast potential of Nigeria’s market of over 200 million people, Yu stressed that the country could become a manufacturing hub for trucks in West Africa with the right policy support.
He warned that continued reliance on imported used vehicles undermines job creation and limits the growth of domestic manufacturing capacity.
“Nigeria is a market with immense potential,” he said. “With skilled local talent and a supportive government policy, the country can take a leading role in regional truck manufacturing.”
Yu also pledged JAC’s continued support for Lanre Shittu Motors, especially in areas such as technical training, spare parts supply, and after-sales services.
“We’re proud of our partnership with LSM. Our focus is on quality, service, and long-term collaboration. We are committed to supporting them as they grow,” he added.
As part of its innovation drive, LSM recently began delivering Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered JAC trucks equipped with advanced safety features such as Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), showcasing a commitment to sustainability and road safety.
In response, Mr. Taiwo Shittu, Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, described JAC as an exceptional and dependable partner.
“JAC is the most supportive company we’ve worked with. They’re respectful, transparent, and culturally attuned. It’s a true partnership,” he said.
Mr. Saheed Shittu, Executive Director of Finance at LSM, described the visit by JAC’s leadership as both “historic and strategic,” stating that it would further solidify the collaboration between the two companies.
Lanre Shittu Motors currently assembles a range of JAC’s heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks in Nigeria and has received multiple awards for quality from the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association.
“Our goal is to provide reliable vehicles, backed by strong after-sales support and genuine parts,” Saheed said. “This partnership is helping us achieve that vision.”
