A former political Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, has been shot dead in Owerri, Imo State.
Gulak was reportedly shot dead around 6.30am on Sunday at Amaekwemgba Junction, Umueze Ezemba Community, close to the airport.
The All Progressives Congress chieftain was said to have been trailed by his eventual killers while driving from Enyiogugu Mbaise area towards the airport in a cab.
The assailants reportedly blocked the vehicle and shot him twice on the head.
He was said to have died on the spot.
Some residents around the area alleged the gunmen came in military camouflage.
Imo Police spokesman, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry cab taking Ahmed Gulak and two others to Sam Mbakwe Airport to catch a 07.20-hour flight.
He said, “On the 30/5/2021, at about 07:20 hours, armed bandits intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry cab carrying Ahmed Gulak and two others who were on their way to Sam Mbakwe Airport to catch a flight.
“Ahmed Gulak left his room at Protea Hotel without informing the police or sister agencies in view of the fragile security situation in the South-East and Imo in particular.
“He left without any security escorts and while the cab driver took irregular route to the airport, six armed bandits who rode in a Toyota Sienna intercepted, identified and shot at Ahmed Gulak around Umueze Obiangwu in the Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the airport.
“The Commissioner of Police, Imo, Abutu Yaro, has directed a discreet investigation into the matter as tactical and special forces have been deployed to cordon the area and arrest perpetrators.”
