The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday evening declared candidate of the Labour Party, Alex Otti, as winner of last Saturday’s governorship election held in Abia State.
He polled 275,467 votes to beat his closest rival, Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party who scored 88,529 votes.
It is the first governorship seat to be won by the Labour Party.
There had been anxiety in the state since the collation of the election results was suspended on Monday by INEC.
This came after announcing the results of 16 of the 17 local governments areas with Otti clearly leading.
Specifically, INEC suspended the collation of results in Obingwa LGA where it noted that its office was invaded by thugs on Sunday.
Announcing the results INEC Returning Officer for the poll, Prof. Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti, who is Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, gave the details of votes received by the parties that participated in the election as follows:
