Anger mounts as Nigerians protest high cost of living in Minna
Many Nigerians on Monday morning took to the streets of Minna, Niger State, to protest the high cost of living in the country.
The people chanting protest songs blocked main roads in the city.
Women and young people were among the demonstrators with police officers and other security personnel watching to ensure the situation did not get out of hand.
Newstrends reports latest inflation rate released by the National Bureau of Statistics as 28.92 per cent up from the previous month of 28.20 per cent. This was due to continued rise in food price, transport fare and others.
The Minna protesters, according to The Nation, said that the increase in food prices and the inadequate response from the government compelled them to block main roads to draw the attention of the authorities.
Niger Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, addressed the protesters and stated that the administration understood the suffering and difficulties that families were going through at the moment.
He added that the government was working towards lowering the cost of living and reducing the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.
