Just in: Court remands Emefiele in EFCC custody over abuse of office
Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This was on the order of a Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja, where he was was arraigned on Monday alongside his co-defendant, Henry Omole, by the EFCC.
Justice Rahmon Oshodi gave the order after Emefiele and his co-defendant, Herry Omoile, pleaded not guilty to a fresh 26-count charge bordering on abuse of office brought against them by the EFCC.
The judge, however, remanded Omoile in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS).
The defence lawyer, Abdulakeem Ladi-Lawal, urged the court to admit his client to bail on self-recognition.
The EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), did not oppose the bail application but urged the judge to impose conditions that would compel the defendants to come to court for their trial.
The allegations levelled against the accused are accepting gratification, gifts through agents, corruption, and fraudulent acquisition of property.
