Just in: Liverpool’s Diogo Jota dies in car crash after wedding
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday two weeks after getting married.
The accident occurred on the A52, near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria after the car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another car.
Jota was travelling in the car with his brother Andre, who is also a footballer. Both players died in the accident after the car went up in flames.
Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash in a statement.
The statement read: “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.

“1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.
“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.”
Jota married his partner Rute Cardoso two weeks ago, and the couple have three children.
The Portuguese international joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 for a fee of £41million, and he has been a key player for the club, contributing to their Premier League title win in the 2024/2025 season and winning two League Cups and two FA Cups with Liverpool.
He scored six goals, and recorded three assists in Liverpool’s title-winning feat last season.
The 28-year-old scored 65 goals in 182 total games for Liverpool, with his most recent goal for the club on April 2, 2025, and a total of 22 assists.
