Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mbah announced his defection on Monday during a state-wide broadcast, describing the move as a “strategic decision” aimed at connecting Enugu to the centre for greater development.
“Today, after deep reflection and consultation, we have decided to join the All Progressives Congress,” the governor declared.
He said the decision was driven by the need to align with the federal government and ensure that Enugu State benefits fully from national policies and programmes.
“To the Peoples Democratic Party, which gave us the platform to serve, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. However, leadership demands difficult, sometimes painful decisions in pursuit of higher goals,” Mbah said.

He expressed appreciation to the PDP for years of support but maintained that joining the APC was necessary to achieve his administration’s development agenda.
The governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for his policies and the support Enugu had received under his administration.
Mbah’s defection did not come alone — he was joined by members of the state House of Assembly, local government chairmen, councillors, and several political appointees.
His exit adds to a growing list of PDP governors who have switched allegiance to the ruling party.
Earlier in the year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno joined the APC with their officials, while Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri is reportedly finalising his move.
According to Mbah, the decision marks “a new chapter” for Enugu and a commitment to “building stronger partnerships for progress.”
