Just in: Nigeria’s power grid partially restored after total collapse
The national power grid has been partially restored after a nationwide blackout on Monday, October 14, 2024, which collapsed at 18:48 hours for the sixth time in 2024.
Newstrends received information that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) received 30MW and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) received 20MW, totalling 50MW.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EkEDC) was also not left out in the partial restoration.
For instance, in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin serviced by the EKEDC, where this NewsTrends writer resides, the power came around 8.20am but went off 9.30am
It was learnt that as of 7pm on Monday, only Ibom Power was operational, with 42.7 MW.
It was the sixth time the grid would collapse this year throwing the nation into total darkness.
The collapse resulted in a loss of supply to all its interface Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations.
In July 2024, when the system collapsed, the TCN blamed the unexpected tripping of three power generation units, which removed 313MW from the grid.
The TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, stated in a report that the company could transmit up to 6,000MW of electricity to distribution centres across the country by the end of the year.
But many research reports indicate that Nigeria needs about 33,000MW to have stable electricity.
