The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed February 4, 2023, as the new date for its governorship primary election.
This followed the death of the PDP flagbearer in the state, Prof Uche Ikonne.
Ikonne, who was a former Abia State University, Uturu, vice-chancellor, died on Wednesday in Abuja.
In a statement on Friday, the party said the governorship primary will hold at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
It is however, not clear, if the national executives of the PDP led by the party’s chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, which is expected to forward Ikonne’s replacement to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has approved the date.
The Abia PDP is loyal to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who is one of the G5 governors opposed to Ayu as the party’s national chairman.
The group has also stayed away from the campaign train of Atiku Abubakar – the party’s presidential candidate in next month election.
