PDP holds late-night national caucus meeting in Abuja
JUST IN: PDP replaces Acting National Chairman amid ongoing power struggle
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has plunged deeper into internal crisis following a dramatic leadership shake-up that saw Mohammed Abdulrahman, National Vice-Chairman (North Central), emerge as the party’s new Acting National Chairman.
The announcement, made on Saturday in Abuja, followed a heated confrontation within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which suspended several top officials during an emergency meeting. Those affected include Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and Okechukwu Osuoha. The PDP cited violations of its constitution and disciplinary procedures as grounds for the suspensions.
However, the situation took a contentious turn when a rival faction, reportedly backed by influential party figures, rejected the suspensions and countered with its own sweeping changes. Senator Anyanwu, speaking at a separate briefing, declared the suspension of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and other NWC members, asserting that the faction’s decisions were legitimate.

In a swift move, Anyanwu announced Abdulrahman’s appointment as Acting National Chairman and named Chinwe Nnorom, the party’s Director of Publicity, as the interim spokesperson. He further disclosed that the National Legal Adviser had endorsed the faction’s resolutions during a virtual meeting from Canada.
This latest episode of infighting comes just a day after a Federal High Court in Abuja halted the PDP’s planned national convention slated for November 15, intensifying concerns over the party’s stability ahead of key political engagements.
Saturday’s developments underscore the deepening rift within the PDP, as rival blocs continue to jostle for control of the party’s leadership. The unfolding drama raises fresh questions about the opposition party’s cohesion and readiness for future electoral contests.
