Just in: Police attack Independence Day protesters in Abuja

There was commotion in Abuja on Tuesday morning as some police reportedly fired teargas at peaceful protesters.

The confirmation came in a viral video on social media showing protesters running for safety as security operatives fired shots.
Just like the last protest held on August 1-10, demonstration was tagged #FearlessInOctober, with hundreds of Nigerians taking to the streets to demand an end to bad governance.
The Tuesday protest on the Independence Day was organised by civil society groups, activists, and concerned citizens.
Thr protesters spoke on their frustrations with the current Nigeria’s political, economic and social issues.
They were led by human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore and marched through the nation’s capital, holding signs with messages like “Enough is Enough” and “We Demand Accountability.”
In Lagos, the protesters gathered at the Ikeja underbridge.
The protest, however, was being closely monitored by a large contingent of security personnel, such as policemen, officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The protesters chanted solidarity songs, displaying placards bearing inscriptions such as “Reverse electricity tariff now, “End all attacks on democratic rights”, “Reduce petrol price to N197 per litre; end scarcity”, and “Profit soars while people suffer”.
