Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, has died at the age of 96.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement Thursday evening, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
The Telegraph of London reports that her Majesty’s final public duty was two days ago to accept the resignation of Boris Johnson and invite Liz Truss, the new Prime Minister, to form a government.
